Quran

Learn to recite the Qur'an

This is a continuation of the basic, introductory course on how to read and write Arabic which commenced in Fall of 2011 with Shaikh Musleh Khan. This semester, the course will focus primarily on the recitation the Qur'an. The course is ideal for those who have completed a basic primer on Arabic reading and wish to begin reciting the Qur'an with simple rules of Tajweed. This course will prepare students to take more advanced courses in Tajweed al Qur'an.

Vocabulary of the Quran (Continuing class)

In this course students will explore the vocabulary of the Qur'an with the aim of understanding the gist of the Qur'an while it is being recited. Focusing more on individual words and their derivatives, the course will begin by exploring the common words that make up the bulk of the Qur'an, continuing with chapters in the last juz. By knowing these words and their appearances in various places in the Qur'an, students will begin to piece together the basic meanings of the Qur'an as it is being recited or listened to.

Tajweed al-Quran For Brothers (Continuing class)

In this course, students will continue with the recitation of selected passages of the Quran under the guidance of the instructor. Students will be engaged in an interactive exploration of the rules as the chapter is being recited, and will be provided with ample opportunity to practice the recitation with the identified rules under the guidance of the instructor. This is an intermediate level course, which means that students enrolled in this course must be fluent in the recitation of the Qur'an. Slower students will be assigned a teaching assistant and will re-integrate in the class only when they have become fluent in the recitation.

Arabic Language - an introductory course (Continuing class)

This course will introduce students to the basics of Arabic Grammar, Vocabulary and Conversation using a variety of teaching methods and texts. Based primarily on Book 1 of the Madina Texts, the instructor will use additional material and styles to enhance the learning experience.At the end of the course, students will be able to construct simple nominal sentences in Arabic and converse in Arabic using vocabulary and grammar learned in class. This course will prepare students to further their study of Arabic Grammar and Syntax as covered in subsequent texts in the curriculum.Shaikh Musleh Khan is a recent graduate of Madinah University. He has previously taught courses at Al-Maghrib Institute, Al-Kauthar Institute and has delivered lectures and khutbahs at various institutions across the GTA.

Arabic Language Book 3 (Continuing class)

Book 3 will resume with further exploration of grammar and syntax. Each lesson will include a story that is based on grammatical notes specific to the lesson. This course will expose students to the use of various grammatical structures in the Quran and Hadith. In addition, other modes of the language such as listening, speaking and oral comprehension will be explored. Students will be challenged to engage with the language in order to build proficiency. NOTE: There will be classes on Jan. 8 and Jan. 15, 9 am - 11 am. Thereafter classes will be held on Mondays, Jan. 23 - Mar. 5, 7 pm - 9 pm.

Conversational Arabic (Continuing class)

Based on the university level text al- Kitaab fi Ta'allum, this course will allow the students to utilise their prior knowledge of Arabic Grammar and conversation skills gained through previous study to further enhance their understanding of the language as it is spoken in various parts of the Muslim world. Students will engage with the language using multimedia, project-based discovery, radio broadcasts and other methods to build proficiency. NOTE: There will be classes on Jan. 8 and Jan. 15, 11 am - 1 pm. Thereafter classes will be held on Tuesdays Wednesdays, Jan. 18 - Mar. 7, 7 pm - 9 pm.

Arabic Language Book 2 (Continuing class)

Book 2 will resume from Lesson 11 with further exploration of grammar and syntax. Each lesson will include a story that is based on grammatical notes specific to the lesson. This course will expose students to the use of various grammatical structures in the Qur'aan and Hadith with weekly grammatical assignments based on aayaat of the Qur'aan. Tips on using various dictionaries are reinforced by ongoing practice. There will be a take-home assignment every 5 lessons to complete at your own pace. In addition, other modes of the language such as listening, speaking and oral comprehension will be explored. Students will be challenged to engage with the language in order to build proficiency. New students comfortable at this level are welcome to join us before registering, as well as students wishing to revise under a clear and fresh approach to learning Arabic grammar. If after sampling the course, you feel it is not for you, you are under no obligation to register.

Join us in one of the IITs flagship programs on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month, as Shaikh Abdool Hamid discusses the pressing issues of marriage, divorce and spousal obligations in light of the verses of Surah-al-Baqarah. These sessions are meant to systematically explain the verses of the Holy Qur'an from the earliest sources, covering the reasons and context of revelation with supporting evidence from the ahadith, as well as deducing the laws and their implementation in contemporary society.

Al-Arbaeen an-Nawawi - Exploring the Forty Hadith of al Imam an Nawawi

This intensive course will cover the famous collection of Imam an Nawawi. Students will be introduced to the life of Imam-an Nawawi and the value of his collection of forty hadith. They will be required to memorize the text in Arabic and to study the meaning and lessons derived from the text. Finally, students will understand the broad spectrum of subjects covered in the collection and their relevance for living as Muslims in today's society.
