Question on madhabs (schools of thought)
QUESTION: Do we follow 1 Imam or all 4 or none of them? ANSWER: The answer to your question is not so black and white as some people may think. Let me attempt to explain my view as follows: 1 ) In regard to the principles of Islam that are self-evident in the sources, no one is required to follow anyone but the Law-giver Himself; for example, this is the case on issues such as the obligation to pray, give zakah, fast, make the pilgrimage. Likewise, we do not need an expert to tell us about the heinous nature of the cardinal sins clearly forbidden in the sources. Continued...

Canadian Council of Imams Appeals for helping Haiti
Toronto – In response to the catastrophic disaster and immense damages caused by the horrific earthquake in Haiti, the Canadian Council of Imams appeals to all the Canadian Muslim individuals and organizations to make their contributions with all possible means available to them to join the national response, the international community and the different faith communities in response to this tragedy.
"It is our human, natural and Islamic duty to contribute with whatever means we can to make some difference" Dr. Hamid Slimi said in an interview. He added, "this is one chance where all faith groups could show the best of their teachings and how the latter become practical in reality. We cannot just stand and watch without doing our share. We must do something whether individually or collectively as we did in the aftermath of the Tsunami a few years ago."

Message from ISNA president Dr. Ingrid Mattson on the Haitian Earthquake
It has been reported that a prominent Christian leader, Pat Robertson, has said that Haiti has been "cursed" by a "pact with the devil." Fortunately, this is not the mainstream Christian position and my friend, the Reverend Paul Raushenbush, has rejected Robertson's "blaming the victims" theology. Religious leaders must take a stance against extremist voices in their community, and I am glad to see Rev. Raushenbush respond to Robertson's ridiculous and offensive suggestions. As Muslims, we believe that human suffering is not always explainable or understandable. We do know that innocent people suffer all the time, from sickness and natural disaster, and that in such cases, we are required to do two things: First, pray and remember, as the Qur'an says that "to God we belong and to Him we return." Second, we must help those who are suffering. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, reported in a Sacred Hadith that if we want to be close to God, we should visit the sick and feed the needy. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will say, "O son of Adam, I fell ill and you did not visit me." The person will say, "O Lord, how could I visit you when You are the Lord of the worlds?" He will say, "Did you not know that So-and-so fell ill and you did not visit him? If you had visited him, you would have found Me with him [the hadith continues]." Continued...

Ramadan wrap-up
September 20, 2009 will be remembered as one of the most beautiful days in the genesis of the IIT - our first outdoor Eid prayer drew a record crowd; the chant of the takbeeraat under a peaceful sky and dazzling sunshine has made this day one to remember. We would like to thank the participants in this Ramadan's Build IIT challenge (generously sponsored by Famous Optical), mashallah the children raised $26,000! We are grateful for the hard work of the organisers (Sr. Hajara and Br. Anwar), whose tireless efforts ensured the success of this campaign.
Transcript of Eidul Fitr khutbah delivered by Shaikh Ahmad Kutty
"Brothers and sisters: Allah is great; Allah is great; Allah is great. All praises be to Allah. We praise Him abundantly for His countless mercies and favors upon us; we thank Him above all for the gift of Islam, for the gift of Qur'an, for the gift of salah (Prayer), for the gift of fasting, for the gift of vigils, and for the gift of devotions" Continued...
